CDGA Weekly Update

Scouting Report
Once again the frustration of a Chicago spring strikes and leaves the head scratching for all and stress of why won't it grow for many more. While in Japan the temperatures were pushing the 75-85°F mark which is also their spring time – that was not the case here and this weekend will be even further from that as a dreaded late spring frost will set some bentgrasses back 5-7 days at least. Once again our issue is being compounded by a combination of wet cloudy conditions followed by nights which are clear and creating rapid temperature drops. This is in particular a problem for sand based rootzones as the larger pore spaces allow for greater temperature changes and that directly impacts the bentgrasses. Disease finally arrived and many pictures came in with active microdochium and mycelia to boot – it was not something that many of us were used to but with the fog and high humidity on show many people saw an outbreak.
Insect activity has also popped up with some ataenius being spotted post application of control products. Weed activity has certainly been gangbusters with dandelion laying siege to any untreated areas. We are also moving into the more amine based product use unless you are along the lake which seems to be really dragging at the moment in regards to temperatures and plant activity.
Finally, the ITF annual fundraiser is on this Monday – if you have not registered maybe hope Mr. Cella has a spot for you at the Makray Memorial event where you are almost guaranteed lightning fast greens. As we progress next week while not having a large volume of precipitation in the forecast certainly is not balmy tropical with grass skirt weather – we may see some more microdochium activity combined with potential for Waitea – the season has officially started!
